Eyo Festival Of Lagos
The Eyo Festival, otherwise known as the Adamu Orisha Play, is a Yoruba festival unique to Lagos, Nigeria and is traditionally performed on Lagos Island. In modern times, it is presented by the people of Lagos as a tourist event due to its historical relevance.
The Eyo festival is an outlet used to showcase the culture of the lsale Eko people. It can be organized for special occasions such as the death of prominent chiefs, elders, the installation of a new Oba, or as entertainment at special state functions or occasions.
The Eyo, when they encounter people, greets them with a phrase in the liebu dialect of Yoruba, "E sunrunkunrun, we ma iagbon die!" meaning, "Don't fear anything, have a taste of the palm tree," and taps the individual on the shoulders with the
"opambata."When he is given money, he will pray for the person and recite the praise song of his lga. It is however, a taboo to either wear the Eyo costume overnight or cross any body of water, while wearing it.
